Guru-Shishya Parampara or Master-Disciple Tradition is a centuries old tradition from India in which knowledge is imparted orally from the teacher to the student in a face to face setting. It is one of the most important traditions of the Indian sub-continent to acquire knowledge. The Shishya, or student, is totally dedicated towards their Guru, or master, and generally lives with their Guru for many years and so begins the father-son relationship. It is important to state that for the Guru, the Shishya signifies the continuity of their art and eventually as the Shishya becomes proficient in their art, they themselves become a Guru and have their own disciples to whom they impart their knowledge. In this way, musical knowledge and melodies or compositions are passed from generation to generation. This method of learning has stood the test of time and has ensured that many old compositions are still played and sung today. Guru-Shishya Parampara is also the cornerstone of all the Gharanas of music. On this occasion, Virasat Foundation will be releasing a special colour souvenir highlighting this rich tradition at the concert.
Virasat Foundation is honoured that these brilliant musicians are performing in this special concert. Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan is a legendary tabla maestro of India and is the foremost living exponent of the Ajrada Gharana of tabla playing. He is one of India’s most eminent tabla Guru’s and was recently awarded one of India’s highest awards by the President of India.
