Virasat Foundation in association with Namdhari Sangat Presents Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji Sangeet Sammelan – A Two Day Grand Festival of Indian Classical Music.

Surrey, B.C. – Virasat Foundation in association with Namdhari Sangat are proud to announce that they are presenting a special two day Grand Festival of Indian Classical Music in the memory of His Holiness Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji. The Sangeet Sammelan will be held at 5pm each day on Saturday July 30th 2016 and Sunday July 31st 2016 at the Michael J. Fox Theatre, Burnaby, B.C. This free music festival will be the first of it’s kind to be held in the Lower Mainland and will be held in the divine presence of His Holiness Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji. It will feature internationally acclaimed musicians including the great tabla virtuoso Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and the world-renowned bansuri (flute) maestro Pandit Ronu Majumdar amongst many others.

Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji (1920-2012) made an immense contribution to Indian Classical Music which was one of a kind and incomparable. He was not only a master musician but was also a great humanitarian and spiritual master. He was the spiritual head of the Namdhari Sikhs from 1959 to 2012. His patronage of the arts was unparalleled. Through His great patronage many well-known musicians were helped both financially and in other ways. He also promoted Indian Classical Music throughout the world and was revered by the top musicians of India who used to come to Him to seek His blessings. He was a vast treasure trove of traditional compositions that were centuries old.

He was devoted to the recital of hymns from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib in ragas performed on stringed instruments. His dedication and blessings had allowed students from all around the world to learn from the great maestros and to continue singing the Gurbani in its purest and traditional form. On this occasion a special colour souvenir in the memory of Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji will be released during the Sangeet Sammelan.

The first day of the Sangeet Sammelan will start with a traditional dhrupad from Ustad Harbhajan Singh who is amongst the most senior musicians of today that sing Gurbani Kirtan based on ragas in its traditional form. He will be accompanied by Balwant Singh (vocal) and Harpreet Singh on tabla. Ustad Gurdev Singh will perform traditional classical compositions on the dilruba and the tarshehnai. He is a leading performer of these stringed instruments and will be accompanied on tabla by the popular local artist Sunny Matharu. Following this, Dilshad Khan will perform a sarangi solo. He is one of the leading sarangi players in India and is the nephew of the great sarangi legend Ustad Sultan Khan. The sarangi is regarded as the closest instrument to the human voice. Dilshad Khan will be accompanied by Hanif Khan on tabla. In the second-half the audience will be treated to the mystical sound of the bansuri from the world-renowned bansuri maestro Pandit Ronu Majumdar. His name is synonymous with his instrument and he will be accompanied on tabla by one of India’s greatest living musicians Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri.

One of India’s top vocalists of the younger generation, Balwant Singh, will begin the second day by singing compositions that he learnt from Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji. He will be accompanied by Dilshad Khan on sarangi and Harpreet Singh on tabla. Following this, the young outstanding musician, Abhisek Lahiri, will present a sarod recital. He will be accompanied on tabla by Ustad Akram Khan who is one of India’s top tabla players. The finale of the Sangeet Sammelan will be a traditional tabla solo presented by the great living legend Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. He will present traditional compositions of the Lucknow Gharana and will be accompanied on sarangi by Dilshad Khan. A two-part video documentary on Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji will also be shown during the two day music festival.
