Tribute Concert for Ustad Sultan Khan – 2012

Ustad Sultan Khan passed away on November 27th 2011 in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He was considered to be amongst the finest classical musicians that India has produced and was credited for reviving the popularity of the sarangi throughout the world. His musical genius had few equals and he was described by some as one of the greatest improvisers of any instrument. Virasat Foundation is proud to have honoured him in 2004 with the Pride of Performance Award and released a colour souvenir about his life and contribution to music. He was a founding honorary patron of Virasat Foundation and was very dear to the music lovers of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland having performed here many times. Virasat Foundation will be releasing another special colour souvenir in his honour at the concert.

Virasat Foundation is honoured that the great tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain will be performing a tabla solo in this special tribute concert. He had a special musical partnership with Ustad Sultan Khan going back over thirty years. The two had performed together to the delight of audiences worldwide and were known as one of India’s top classical duos. Ustad Zakir Hussain is today appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon and one of the greatest musicians of our time.  A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, and as one of India’s reigning cultural ambassadors.  Along with his legendary father and teacher, Ustad Alla Rakha, he has elevated the status of his instrument both in India and around the world. His playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity, founded in formidable knowledge and study.

Ustad Sultan Khan’s son Sabir Khan and nephew Dilshad Khan will be performing a special sarangi jugalbandhi or duet as a tribute to their great Ustad. Both are excellent young musicians and are following in the footsteps of Ustad Sultan Khan and are keeping their family tradition alive. They are the ninth generation to take up sarangi in their family.

Dilshad Khan and Sabir Khan were both born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and started their musical training from their grandfather Ustad Gulab Khan and from Dilshad’s father Ustad Nasir Khan. They later took further guidance from their uncle and father respectively Ustad Sultan Khan. Both Dilshad and Sabir have made a good name for themselves at a young age and have shared the stage with many top musicians including Ustad Sultan Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain and many others. They have played sarangi in many popular films like Chameli, Jodha Akbar, Dor, Devdas, Mohabbatein, Tere Naam to name a few. They have played in the major festivals in India and have also played at many top venues around the world like the Royal Albert Hall in London. They are indeed amongst the leading musicians of the younger generation in India.

Virasat Foundation is delighted to be presenting this special tribute concert featuring these gifted artists and welcomes everyone to attend. This will be an opportunity for everyone to listen to tabla at its finest from one of the greatest performers Ustad Zakir Hussain and to also listen to sarangi at its best in the form of a rare jugalbandhi or duet. Please contact Virasat Foundation in advance for tickets. Tickets will also be available online at our website.
